Faithlessness and the Faithful God

Nov 16, 2025    Matt Schiesser

Malachi turns from the corruption of the priests to the collapse of covenant faithfulness among the people. And he names it with a hard but honest word—faithlessness: betrayal, treachery, covenant-breaking. When God’s Word is neglected, faithfulness breaks down—and the cracks show up everywhere: in relationships, in worship, and in the home.

In Malachi 2:10–16, the Lord confronts three arenas of unfaithfulness: faithlessness toward brothers and sisters, faithlessness toward God through spiritual compromise, and faithlessness in marriage through covenant betrayal and divorce. The people wonder why worship feels empty and heaven feels closed, and God answers plainly: He was witness to their vows, and He will not treat covenant-breaking as small.

But this passage is not merely a warning—it’s an invitation home. Malachi exposes our treachery while holding up a God who remains faithful. From Hosea to Malachi, the story of the Twelve is the story of a pursuing God—one who chases, cleanses, and redeems unfaithful people. The call is clear: guard your spirit, return to covenant loyalty, and fix your eyes on the One who is faithful—Jesus Christ.
